TRAFFIC ACCIDENT CAUSES /IN PORTUGUESE/

PLAIN DEPOSITS OF RUBBER AND ASPHALTS ON THE WEARING COURSE ARE A NEW TRAFFIC ACCIDENT CAUSE. HIGH LEVELS OF THOSE DEPOSITS WERE FOUND IN 1969 IN THE ST. BARBARA TUNNEL (EXTENSION OF 1357 M) PAVED WITH CONCRETE. THE ANALYSIS OF THOSE DEPOSITS GAVE 60 TO 70% RUBBER, 25 TO 35% ASPHALT, AND OTHER MATERIALS SUCH AS CRUSHED STONE, DIRT, OILS, ETC. THE NONEXISTENT ADEQUATE FRICTION BETWEEN THE VEHICLE TIRES AND THE SMOOTH SURFACE FORMED BY THOSE DEPOSITS, SEEMS TO BE THE CAUSE FOR AN INCREASE OF ABOUT 60% OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN THE TUNNEL. /RRI/
