TRAFFIC RECORDS
THIS PROJECT WAS CARRIED OUT AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF A STATE PROJECT IN CALIFORNIA, ALSO UNDER THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY BUREAU PROGRAM, CONDUCTED BY THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL AND TITLED: "STATEWIDE INTEGRATED TRAFFIC RECORDS SYSTEM." THE MAIN RESULTS OF THE PRESENT, LOCAL-GOVERNMENT PROJECT ARE THEREFORE INCLUDED IN REPORTS COVERING THE STATEWIDE PROJECT AND, TO AVOID DUPLICATION, ARE NOT DETAILED HEREIN. THIS REPORT IS CONFINED TO DESCRIBING LOCAL-GOVERNMENT PARTICIPATION IN THE STATEWIDE EFFORT AND TO COMMENTING ON CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE INTEGRATED SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT THAT ARE OF SPECIAL IMPORTANCE FROM THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT VIEWPOINT. THE STATEWIDE PROJECT REPORTS IN WHICH THE PRINCIPAL FINDINGS OF THIS PROJECT ARE INCLUDED ARE LISTED. SPECIFICALLY, THE PRESENT PROJECT WAS DESIGNED TO INSURE THE EFFECTIVE PARTICIPATION OF CALIFORNIA LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN THE STATEWIDE TRAFFIC RECORDS SYSTEM WHEN THAT SYSTEM BECOMES OPERATIONAL. IT FOCUSED (1) ON MAKING SURE THAT INPUT REQUIREMENTS WOULD BE WITHIN THE CAPABILITIES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, (2) ON PROCEDURES THROUGH WHICH LOCAL GOVERNMENTS WOULD PROVIDE ADEQUATE DATA IN A FORM COMPATIBLE WITH THE STATE SYSTEM, AND (3) ON SYSTEM DESIGN SUCH THAT LOCAL GOVERNMENTS MAY OBTAIN THE KINDS OF OUTPUTS NEEDED FOR IMPROVEMENT OF THEIR TRAFFIC SAFETY EFFORTS.
