A DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSROOM MEDIA PACKAGE TO DEVELOP VISUAL PERCEPTION
THIS STUDY INVESTIGATED THE EFFECTS OF A CLASSROOM VISUAL TRAINING PROGRAM OF SPECIALLY PREPARED SLIDES AND MOTION PICTURES DESIGNED TO INSTRUCT HIGH SCHOOL DRIVER EDUCATION STUDENTS IN PERCEPTION, EVALUATION, JUDGEMENT, AND DECISION-MAKING. IT WAS HYPOTHESIZED THAT THERE WOULD BE NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL GROUPS AS MEASURED IN ON-THE-ROAD PERFORMANCE. THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP FOR THIS STUDY WAS A 19-MEMBER HIGH SCHOOL CLASS. THE CONTROL GROUP WAS AN IDENTICAL, BUT COMPLETELY SEPARATE, CLASS FROM THE SAME INSTITUTION. BOTH GROUPS PARTICIPATED IN A SIMULATOR OR RANGE LABORATORY PROGRAM, PLUS BEHIND-THE-WHEEL TRAINING THAT WAS CONDUCTED CONCURRENTLY WITH THE CLASSROOM PHASE OF TRAINING. CLASSROOM TRAINING FOR THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP CONSISTED OF 26 DAYS OF THE SPECIALLY PREPARED VISUAL TRAINING PROGRAM. NULL HYPOTHESES WERE TESTED BY COMPARING DRIVOMETER FUNCTIONS AND VIDEO-TAPE RECORDINGS OF EYE MOVEMENTS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP WITH THOSE OF THE CONTROL GROUP. ALL OF THE NULL HYPOTHESES WERE ACCEPTED. EXPERIMENTAL STUDENTS IN THIS STUDY DEMONSTRATED MODERATE CORRELATIONS WITH SUBSTANTIAL RELATIONSHIPS OF STEERING WHEEL REVERSALS TO BRAKE APPLICATIONS (CONTROL STUDENTS, HOWEVER, CLOSELY APPROXIMATED THIS RELATIONSHIP), AND OF EYE MOVEMENTS TO SPEED CHANGES. THE CONTROL STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED A MODERATE CORRELATION WITH SUBSTANTIAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN EYE MOVEMENTS TO TRIP TIMES. THESE RELATIONSHIPS APPEAR TO INDICATE THAT A DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSROOM PROGRAM OF INSTRUCTION, SIMILAR TO THE ONE EMPLOYED IN THIS STUDY, CAN BE DEVELOPED TO ELICIT A DIFFERENT "ON-ROAD BEHAVIOR" THAN THAT ELICITED BY INSTRUCTION IN A TRADITIONAL TEXT-ORIENTED CLASSROOM INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM. /SRIS/
