THE EFFECT OF DYNAMIC VISUAL TRAINING ON MANIPULATIVE DRIVING SKILLS
THE PRIMARY PURPOSE WAS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF DYNAMIC VISUAL TRAINING ON THE MANIPULATIVE SKILLS OF A NOVICE DRIVER AND THE FREQUENCY OF HIS EYE MOVEMENTS. THE SECONDARY PURPOSE WAS TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY AND VALUE OF CLASSROOM VISUAL TRAINING RELATIVE TO ITS TRANSFERABILITY TO ACTUAL DRIVING PERFORMANCE. THE SUBJECTS FOR THIS INVESTIGATION WERE SELECTED FROM A POPULATION OF 52, 15 TO 16 YEAR OLD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR DRIVER EDUCATION. THE STUDY CONSISTED OF A CONTROL AND AN EXPERIMENTAL GROUP OF 13 STUDENTS IN EACH. THE CONTROL GROUP RECEIVED A "TRADITIONAL" DRIVER EDUCATION COURSE CONSISTING OF 30 HOURS OF CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION AND SIX HOURS OF LABORATORY INSTRUCTION ON THE STREET. THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP RECEIVED THE SAME NUMBER OF HOURS OF INSTRUCTION WITH A DYNAMIC VISUAL TRAINING FILM PROGRAM INTEGRATED INTO THE CLASSROOM COURSE OF STUDY. ALL OTHER VARIABLES WITHIN THE CONTROL OF THE RESEARCHER WERE HELD CONSTANT. THE "PERCEPTION OF TRAFFIC HAZARDS TEST" WAS ADMINISTERED BEFORE AND AFTER TO EACH GROUP. UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE EACH SUBJECT DROVE AN 8.9 MILE PREPLANNED TEST ROUTE WITH AN ESTABLISHED MEAN COMPLETION TIME OF APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES. THE DRIVOMETER WAS USED AS ONE OF THE ON-STREET TESTING INSTRUMENTS. IN ADDITION, VIDEO TAPE RECORDINGS WERE MADE OF EACH SUBJECT'S EYE MOVEMENTS AS HE NEGOTIATED THE TEST ROUTE. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE ABILITY OF BEGINNING DRIVERS TO IDENTIFY VISUAL STIMULI IS INCREASED BY BOTH TRAINING METHODS BUT TO A GREATER DEGREE BY THE USE OF DYNAMIC TRAINING FILMS. FURTHER, THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DYNAMIC VISUAL TRAINING AND THE DRIVERS' MANIPULATIVE SKILLS OF STEERING AND BRAKING AS MEASURED BY THE DRIVOMETER. FINALLY, THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DYNAMIC VISUAL TRAINING AND GROSS EYE MOVEMENT AS RECORDED BY A VIDEO TAPE RECORDER. /SRIS/
