ACQUISITION OF INFORMATION OF EXPOSURE AND ON NON-FATAL CRASHES. VOL. 3. PROCEDURES FOR AN EXPOSURE SURVEY. FINAL REPORT
DETAILED PROCEDURES FOR AN ANNUAL, NATIONAL SURVEY OF DRIVING EXPOSURE ARE PRESENTED, BASED ON MAILED QUESTIONNAIRES TO A RANDOM SAMPLE OF LICENSED DRIVERS IN THE 50 STATES AND DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. THE TOTAL SAMPLE SIZE IS 28,000 AND SUBSAMPLES IN EACH STATE ARE PROPORTIONAL TO THE NUMBER OF LICENSED DRIVERS. EACH QUESTIONNAIRE REQUIRES INFORMATION ON DRIVER AGE AND SEX, PLUS A ONE-DAY TRIP RECORD INDICATING VEHICLE TYPE, MODEL YEAR, ROAD TYPE, DAY OR NIGHT, AND TRIP MILEAGE. EACH TRIP IS SUBSEQUENTLY CLASSIFIED IN ONE OF 26 UNIQUE DRIVER-VEHICLE-ROAD- ENVIRONMENT COMBINATIONS. THE SAMPLE SIZE ASSURES A MINIMUM SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE OF APPROXIMATELY 30-40 PERCENT BETWEEN MILEAGE ESTIMATES OF ANY TWO CLASSES. THE PROCEDURE PLANS INCLUDE DETAILS OF SAMPLING, DATA COLLECTION, AND ANALYSIS COVERING A 22 MONTH PERIOD. /HSL/
