Electrochemical Behavior of Steel Bar in Concrete Under Tidal Environment

This study examined the half-cell potential and the polarization resistance that were in the nondestructive inspection of corrosion of steel bars in concrete. This study was investigated on relationships between corrosion state of steel bars and its half-cell potential and polarization resistance. The results are summarized as follows. 1) It is considered that the measurement of half-cell potential is one of the effective nondestructive inspection methods for judging corrosion of steel bars. However, half-cell potentials became less noble in wet environments. 2) It is considered that the measurement of polarization resistance by an AC impedance method is one of the effective nondestructive inspection methods for estimating corrosion rate of steel bars at the time of measurement. For the assessment of durability of RC structures in marine environments, it is recommended that both of the two parameters should be regularly and repeatedly measured, realizing a quantitative estimation of corrosion loss of steel bars in concrete.
