THE MEANING OF DRIVING EXPOSURE

A CLEAR DEFINITION OF DRIVING EXPOSURE IS NEEDED FOR COORDINATED ACCIDENT RESEARCH. THE PROPOSED DEFINITION STATES: DRIVING EXPOSURE IS THE FREQUENCY OF TRAFFIC EVENTS WHICH CREATE A RISK OF ACCIDENT. THE MOST COMMON MEASURE OF THE AMOUNT OF EXPOSURE IS VEHICLE MILES OF TRAVEL, WHICH IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE FREQUENCY OF TRAFFIC EVENTS IF SUCH EVENTS OCCUR IN A CONTINUUM WITH CONSTANT RISK. LIKEWISE, DRIVING TIME OR TRAFFIC VOLUME MAY ALSO MEASURE THE AMOUNT OF EXPOSURE. MEASURES WHICH CHARACTERIZE THE NATURE OF EXPOSURE MAY BE DEVELOPED USING VARYING RISKS OF TRAFFIC EVENTS. EXPOSURE DATA ARE MOST USEFUL WHEN CLASSIFIED IN GROUPS BY SYSTEM VARIABLES. /AUTHOR/
