TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM ON THE HANSHIN EXPRESSWAY
SINCE MARCH 1970 THE HANSHIN EXPRESSWAY CORPORATION HAS BEEN OPERATING A SOPHISTICATED TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM OVER THE 80-KM LENGTH OF ITS EXPRESSWAYS IN OSAKA AND KOBE. BY 1975 THE EXPRESSWAY WILL ADD ANOTHER 45 KM, WHICH ALSO WILL BE MADE PART OF THE SYSTEM. AT PESENT THE SYSTEM'S MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS ARE A CENTRAL DIGITAL COMPUTER WITH A 65K WORD MEMORY, OVER 200 LOOP DETECTORS, MORE THAN 70 VARIABLE-MESSAGE SIGNS, AND TV MONITORING STATIONS. HOWEVER, THE OPERATING SYSTEM ALSO EMBRACES A COMMUNIATIONS NETWORK THAT INCLUDES EMERGENCY SERVICES AND VEHICLES, HOSPITALS, POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS, BROADCASTING STATIONS, AND A PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM. FUNCTIONAL AND OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUBSYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED. THE SYSTEM, WHICH HAS BEEN UNDER DEVELOPMENT SINCE 1969, IS SCHEDULED FOR FULL CAPABILITY IN 1975.
