VEHICLE SURVEILLANCE TEST BED: IMPLEMENTATION OPERATION AND EVALUATION
TRW INSTALLED A SURVEILANCE TEST BED IN HOUSTON, TEXAS TO INVESTIGATE THE ACCURACY OF COMPUTERIZED SYSTEMS IN DETERMINING PARAMETERS. DATA FROM A HEAVILY INSTRUMENTED, THREE-INTERSECTION TEST BED IN DOWNTOWN HOUSTON WAS COMMUNICATED APPROXIMATELY THIRTY MILES VIA LEASED LINES TO TRW'S FACILITY FOR PROCESSING BY A SIGMA 5 COMPUTER. THE SOFTWARE USED TO PROCESS THE DATA WAS DESIGNED TO PERMIT VARIOUS GROUPINGS OF SENSORS TO BE ANALYZED TO DETERMINE PREFERRED SENSOR LOCATIONS. VALIDATION DATA WAS OBTAINED USING A TELEVISION CAMERA MOUNTED ON THE ROOF OF AN ADJACENT BUILDING. IT WAS FOUND THAT TRAFFIC PARAMETER ERRORS OF 10 PERCENT OR LESS CAN BE ACHIEVED 90 PERCENT OF THE TIME, USING PROPER INSTRUMENTATION. /AUTHOR/
