CONSIDERATIONS ON THE DEGREE OF ENERGY UTILIZATION OF PASSENGER AND GOODS VEHICLES IN RELATION TO THEIR NET TRANSPORT CAPACITY

THE ARTICLE PRESENTS AND DISCUSSES SOME MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSIONS USED FOR EVALUATING THE PERFORMANCE OF VEHICLE IN TERMS OF FUEL CONSUMPTION IN PERFORMING A GIVEN TRANSPORT MISSION (LOAD X DISTANCE). IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A REPRESENTATION WHICH IS GENERALLY VALID REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE OF POWER USED, AND WHICH ALLOWS IMMEDIATE COMPARISONS BETWEEN VARIOUS TYPES OF VEHICLES FOR DIFFERENT MISSIONS, A POWER UTILIZATION FACTOR IS PROPOSED. THIS FACTOR IS A NON-DIMENSIONAL RATIO WHICH RELATES THE PAYLOAD TRANSPORT CAPACITY TO A GIVEN MISSION. INDICATIVE VALUES OF THE FACTOR, OBTAINED FROM OPERATIONAL SURVEYS, ARE GIVEN FOR SOME TYPES OF LAND, SEA, AND AIR TRANSPORT. REASONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE NEED TO RAISE THE VALUE OF THIS FACTOR. /TRRL/
