NOISE LEGISLATION AND THE EFFECT ON COMMERCIAL VEHICLE ENGINES

THIS ARTICLE DEALS WITH NOISE EMITTED BY DIESEL ENGINES. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO VARIATIONS IN THE STANDARDS AND TEST PROCEDURES ENFORCED BY GOVERNMENTS IN EUROPE AND THE USA AND TO THE TIGHTENING OF STANDARDS WHICH IS TO BE MADE EFFECTIVE FROM THE 1ST OCTOBER 1974 IN GREAT BRITAIN. IMPROVEMENTS TO REDUCE NOISE FROM THE EXHAUST, COOLING FANS, ENGINE AIR INTAKE AND ENGINE SURFACES ARE SUGGESTED. TRANSMISSION AND TIRE NOISES ARE USUALLY MASKED BY OTHER NOISES IN THE MORE NOISY VEHICLES. THE DECLARED AIM OF THE GOVERNMENT IS TO ACHIEVE A LEVEL OF 80 DB(A) FOR LORRIES, AND WITH THAT AIM IN VIEW, A STUDY OF CURRENT DIESEL ENGINE NOISE WAS CONDUCTED. A RELATION WAS DERIVED BETWEEN NOISE AND ENGINE PARAMETERS WHICH IS USED TO PREDICT DIESEL ENGINE NOISE. THERE IS AT THE PRESENT TIME NO CONSTRUCTION REGULATION IN FORCE REGARDING CAB NOISE IN EITHER THE USA OR EUROPE BUT LEGISLATION IS EXPECTED IN THE NEXT TWO OR THREE YEARS. /TRRL/
