MOTOR VEHICLE EXHAUST POLLUTION
THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE MECHANISM OF THE FORMATION OF MAJOR POLLUTANTS AND ANALIZES HYDROCARBONS, CARBON MONOXIDE AND NITRIC OXIDE. THE EFFECT OF ENGINE AND OPERATING VARIABLES ON THE CONCENTRATION OF POLLUTANTS IS INVESTIGATED, AND U.S. AND EUROPEAN LEGISLATION AND CONTROL TECHNIQUES ARE OUTLINED. A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF SOME ALTERNATIVE POWER PLANTS; DIESEL ENGINES, BATTERY POWERED VEHICLES, FUEL CELLS, EXTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES, AND GAS TURBINES. THE USE OF "CLEANER" FUELS (LIQUIFIED PETROLEUM GAS AND COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS) WHEN USED WITH CONVENTIONAL ENGINES CAN LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS IN EXHAUST POLLUTANTS. /TRRL/
