Injury Facts. 2012 Edition
This report presents information on the following categories of injuries in the United States: All unintentional injuries, occupational injuries, injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents, and injuries in the home and community. Additional sections provide State data and International data on injuries. In the section on motor vehicle injuries, it is reported that between 1912 and 2010 motor vehicle deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles were reduced 96%, from 33 to less than 1.5. In 1912, there were 3,100 fatalities when the number of registered vehicles totaled only 950,000. In 2010, there were 35,500 fatalities, but registrations soared to 255 million. While mileage data were not available in 1912, the 2010 mileage death rate of 1.18 per 100,000,000 vehicle miles was down 4% from the revised 2009 rate of 1.23, and is the lowest on record.
