TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS OF FREEWAY SERVICE AREA PATRONS
OVER 3,000 INTERVIEWS WERE OBTAINED AT 17 INTERSTATE SERVICE AREAS ALONG I-90 BETWEEEN BELOIT, WISCONSIN AND TOMAH, WISCONSIN. AS WOULD BE EXPECTED OUT-OF-STATE MOTORISTS WERE LARGELY VACATIONERS (70 PERCENT); ONLY 13 PERCENT WERE ENGAGED IN WORK. FOR THE WISCONSIN MOTORISTS THE REVERSE WAS TRUE. THE PREDOMINANT STOP PURPOSE FOR ALL FACILITIES COMBINED FOR BOTH AUTO TYPES WAS TO BUY GAS ONLY. MEDIAN TRAVEL DISTANCES FOR A SAMPLING OF 960 WISCONSIN MOTORISTS ON THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM ONLY INDICATED THAT THEY TRAVELED 140 MILES IN A SINGLE DAY; THE COMPARABLE FIGURE FOR 1,575 OUT-OF-STATE MOTORISTS WAS 290 MILES. WISCONSIN MOTORISTS STOPPED ON THE AVERAGE EVERY 162.9 MILES OR 2.4 HOURS WHEREAS OUT-OF-STATE MOTORISTS STOPPED EVERY 188.7 MILES OR 2.6 HOURS. /DOT/
