The European E3 Tanker: Development of an Ecological Ship

Five major European shipbuilders have cooperated in designing a new generation of ecological tankers of 280,000 tons deadweight: the E3 Tanker. The design target was to reduce the risk of accidental pollution, not forgetting other types of marine pollution. Safety is a key element in the project, in order to cut the chain of events leading to pollution from oil spills. Protective actions are planned at each step of this chain, like optimized double hull and cargo tank arrangements, reinforced waterline belt, easy-to-maintain ballast tanks, safety devices for ballast tanks, state-of-the art navigation and safety equipment, duplicated rudder arrangement. These measures ensure a lower probability of accidents, and further minimize the adverse ecological consequences of the few unavoidable marine casualties. The project has also paid careful attention to economy of operation, both in controlling building costs and in providing for easy, economical operation and maintenance. In particular, low fuel consumption has been achieved by optimum hull lines and propellers. To reduce maintenance, the structural design has paid special attention to steel fatigue and corrosion problems. The first E3 Tanker is under construction and will be delivered in late 1995.
