USE OF CATALYSTS IN CONTROLLING AUTOMOBILE EXHAUST EMISSIONS
THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND THE PROGRESS OF THE DEVELOPMENT TOWARDS FINISHED CATALYTIC REACTOR SYSTEMS FOR CONTROL OF CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) AND HYDROCARBONS (HC) ON THE ONE HAND, AND OXIDES OF NITROGEN (NO) ON THE OTHER. AT THE PRESENT TIME, CATALYTIC SYSTEMS WHICH ARE EFFICIENT AND MODERATELY DURABLE EXIST FOR THE CONTROL OF CO AND HC, BUT IT HAS PROVED MORE DIFFICULT TO FIND CATALYSTS THAT WILL REMOVE NO WITHOUT AMMONIA FORMATION AS AN UNWANTED SIDE-PRODUCT AND THAT ARE ALSO SUFFICIENTLY DURABLE EVEN WHEN USED WITH NON-LEADED GASOLINE. /NAS/
