AUTOMATIC VEHICLE SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS
THE PRESENT PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE "1972 CARNAHAN CONFERENCE ON ELECTRONIC CRIME COUNTERMEASURES" HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY ON 19--21 APRIL 1972 AND IS INCLUDED IN THE PROCEEDINGS OF THAT CONFERENCE. AN EVALUATION IS MADE OF THE MOST COMMON CATEGORIES OF AUTOMATIC VEHICLE MONITORING SYSTEMS PROPOSED TO DATE-- RADIO-FREQUENCY MULTILATERATION SYSTEMS THAT USE TIME-OF-ARRIVAL OR PHASE-DIFFERENCE MEASUREMENTS TO DETERMINE VEHICLE RANGE FROM SEVERAL FIXED GROUND STATIONS, AND THE "SIGNPOST" TECHNIQUE WHEREBY VEHICLE PROXIMITY TO ESTABLISHED LANDMARKS IS SENSED BY LOW-POWER RADIO-FREQUENCY TRANSMISSION OR BY OPTICAL OR ACOUSTIC SENSORS--- AND AN ALTERNATE SYSTEM IS PROPOSED WHICH IS DESCRIBED AS AN INCREMENTAL DEAD-RECKONING SYSTEM WITH PERIODIC POSITION RESETS THAT RESULT FROM CORRELATION OF SENSED WITH STORED DATA. THE ADVANTAGE CLAIMED FOR THE SYSTEM, WHOSE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE ARE DESCRIBED, IS THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF MINIMIZING VEHICLE-BORNE HARDWARE AT THE EXPENSE OF INCREASED SOFTWARE COMPLEXITY. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE DATA PROCESSING CAN BE ACCOMMODATED BY A TIMESHARING COMPUTER SYSTEM, MAKING THE SYSTEM SUITED TO SMALL-FLEET USERS AND SMALL-SCALE PILOT PROGRAMS.
