NATURE CALLED CAUSE OF 90 PCT OF CARBON MONOXIDE
GLOBAL ESTIMATES OF NATURAL CARBON MONOXIDE PRODUCTION LEVELS, MADE AT ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY, INDICATE THAT MAN-MADE SOURCES ACCOUNT FOR LESS THAN 10 PER CENT OF THE WORLD'S TOTAL. OF THE TOTAL AMOUNT PRODUCED BY NATURE, AT LEAST 3 BILLION TONS ARE BELIEVED TO COME FROM DECAYING ORGANIC MATTER IN SWAMPS, TROPICAL FORESTS AND RICE PADDIES. DECAY AND GROWTH OF CHLOROPHYLL ACCOUNTS FOR ANOTHER 100 MILLION TONS A YEAR, AND THE REMAINDER--A MINIMUM OF SOME 400 MILLION TONS--IS BELIEVED TO COME FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES, INCLUDING THE OCEANS. MAN-MADE SOURCES ACCOUNT FOR ABOUT 270 MILLION TONS A YEAR. THE STUDY UPSETS PREVIOUS NOTIONS THAT MAN-MADE SOURCES WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF THE CARBON MONOXIDE EMITTED INTO THE AIR. THE ARGONNE STUDY IS BEING CONDUCTED UNDER THE TECHNICAL DIRECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY, THE AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE, AND THE AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURER'S ASSOCIATION.
