EXPERIMENTS IN VISUAL SEARCH
SOME OF THE FINDINGS OBTAINED IN A CONTINUING STUDY OF VISUAL SEARCH CONDUCTED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. THESE WERE TWO GENERAL OBJECTIVES: (1) TO PROVIDE A SOUND BODY OF EMPIRICAL DATA AND (2) TO DEVELOP A VIABLE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK. RESULTS ARE SUMMARIZED UNDER THE FOLLOWING TOPICAL HEADINGS: SIZE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TARGET DISK AND SURROUNDING DISKS; FITTING EXPONENTIALS; NUMBERS AND DENSITY NONTARGETS; RELATING SEARCH TIME TO TARGET-BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS; RELATING RESPONSE TIME TO TARGET-BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS; AND AN INDEX OF TARGET DIFFICULTY. GRAPHICAL ILLUSTRATIONS AND TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED.
