BUS EXPERIMENT IS CONTINUING IN SAN JUAN, P.R.
BUSES TRAVELING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF TRAFFIC FLOW IN SPECIAL BUS LANES HAVE ATTRACTED 700,000 NEW PASSENGERS. THE EXTRA FARES PAID THE COST OF REVERSING THE TRAFFIC PATTERNS IN LESS THAN 30 DAYS. BESIDES CUTTING TRAVEL TIME OTHER BENEFITS OF THE NEW SYSTEM INCLUDE LESS WEAR AND TEAR ON THE BUSES -- MEANING LESS MAINTENANCE AND STREET BREAKDOWNS. THE SUCCESSES OF THE EXPERIMENT HAVE PROMPTED THE FIVE PRINCIPAL DEPARTMENTS CONCERNED TO CONTINUE THE SERVICE.
