THE WELL-KNOWN MODEL FOR A FIXED CYCLE TRAFFIC LIGHT IS STUDIED IN DETAIL. EXPRESSIONS ARE DERIVED FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE WAITING TIME AND THE QUEUE LENGTH. SOME NEW QUANTITIES ARE INTRODUCED DESCRIBING THE NON-STATIONARY BEHAVIOR OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHT. MATHEMATICAL TOOLS FROM QUEUEING THEORY ARE USED TO SOLVE SEVERAL PROBLEMS.
