EUROPE'S RAILWAYS GO ALL OUT TO WOO THE MOTORIST - AND THE RESPONSE IS GREAT
IN FRANCE, SNCF AUTO-TRAIN CUSTOMERS HAVE DOUBLED OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. IN THE GERMAN FEDERAL REPUBLIC, DEUTSCHE BUNDESBAHN'S AUTO IM REISZUG SERVICE SHOWS A 50% JUMP OVER 1968 RESULTS. THE RAILROADS OF ITALY, HOLLAND, BELGIUM AND DENMARK SHOW SIMILAR INCREASES, WHILE BRITISH RAILWAYS MOTORAIL IS GROWING SO FAST THAT 10,000 MORE CAR SPACES HAVE BEEN ADDED THIS YEAR. IT IS ONLY IN SWEDEN AND THE UNITED STATES THAT IT HAS NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL, POSSIBLY BECAUSE THERE PASSENGERS AND CARS ARE NOT CARRIED ON THE SAME TRAIN. HOWEVER, THE COMMONWEALTH RAILWAYS OF AUSTRALIA MAKES MONEY FROM CAR-CARRYING IN SPITE OF FOLLOWING THIS SAME PRINCIPLE. /AUTHOR/
