SIMULATION OF AN URBAN TRANSPORTATION TRANSFER POINT
SIMULATION TECHNIQUES CAN ASSIST THE DESIGN PROCESS BY RELATING THE CONFLICTING OBJECTIVES OF MINIMUM COST AND MAXIMUM PATRONAGE OF A FACILITY. SIMULATION DETERMINES THE DELAY INHERENT IN A PARTICULAR DESIGN, FROM WHICH THE EFFECT ON PATRONAGE CAN BE ESTIMATED. PARAMETERS ARE THEN ALTERED TO CAUSE LESS DELAY AT MINIMUM COST. THIS PROCESS IS ITERATED UNTIL DELAY IS CONSISTENT WITH PATRONAGE COST. A MODEL OF A PASSENGER TRANSFER POINT BETWEEN A GEOMETRICALLY FLEXIBLE DISTRIBUTOR SYSTEM AND A REGIONAL RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM IS DEVELOPED. THE MODEL INCLUDES THE SCHEDULED ARRIVALS OF REGIONAL TRAINS, THE PASSENGER MOVEMENTS AND WAITS IN THE TRANSFER POINT AND THE SCHEDULED DEPARTURES OF DISTRIBUTOR TRAINS. THE ROLE OF THE SIMULATION IN TRANSFER POINT DESIGN AND SYSTEM SCHEDULING IS DISCUSSED WITH ITS RELATION TO OVERALL SYSTEMS OBJECTIVES. AN EXAMPLE ILLUSTRATING THE MORNING INPUT RUSH IS GIVEN, ASSUMING A SIMPLE PASSENGER ARRIVAL DISTRIBUTION WITH TIME. THE RESULTS OF THE SIMULATION RUNS WITH DIFFERENT PARAMETER SETS ARE COMPARED, AND AN EVALUATION OF THE SIMULATION IS PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
