NEW TOLL SYSTEM
THE PORT OF NEW YORK AUTHORITY HAS JOINED WITH THE NEW YORK STATE BRIDGE AUTHORITY AND THE NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY AUTHORITY IN ADOPTING A ONE-WAY TOLL COLLECTION SYSTEM DESIGNED TO SPEED THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AND EASE CONGESTION ON TWELVE HUDSON RIVER AND INTERSTATE NEW YORK--NEW JERSEY CROSSINGS. UNDER THE NEW PROCEDURE, OPERATORS OF ALL VEHICLES WILL PAY A ROUND-TRIP TOLL ON THEIR EASTBOUND TRIP, THEREBY ELIMINATING THE NEED TO STOP TO PAY A TOLL ON THE WESTBOUND TRIP. RECENT SURVEYS HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT VIRTUALLY ALL VEHICLES USING THE TWELVE FACILITIES MADE ROUND-TRIP CROSSINGS. THE NEW PROCEDURE WILL INCLUDE ALL HUDSON RIVER AND INTERSTATE NEW YORK--NEW JERSEY CROSSINGS OVER THE 130-MILE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE RIP VAN WINKLE BRIDGE BETWEEN CATSKILL AND HUDSON, NEW YORK, AND THE OUTERBRIDGE CROSSING BETWEEN PERTH AMBOY, NEW JERSEY AND STATEN ISLAND. THE THREE AGENCIES EMPHASIZED TAHT THE NEW COLLECTION SYSTEM WAS NOT A CHANGE IN EXISTING TOLL RATES. /TE/
