CHANGES IN SUPPLY OF PARKING SPACE
IT IS REASONABLE TO SAY THAT ON THE AVERAGE THERE HAS BEEN A DEFINITE INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PARKING SPACES IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT, ALTHOUGH THERE WERE A FEW CITIES WHERE THIS WAS NOT TRUE. FOR ALL CITIES OF ALL POPULATION GROUPS, THE AVERAGE ANNUAL INCREASE IN PARKING SPACE AMOUNTED TO TWO PERCENT. WHETHER OR NOT AN OVERALL TWO PERCENT ANNUAL INCREASE IN PARKING SPACE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY CAN BE JUDGED IN THE LIGHT OF WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT MOTOR-VEHICLE TRAVEL AND REGISTRATION AND IN THE CHANGES IN VOLUME OF USE OF PARKING SPACES AT THE CURB, AND IN LOTS AND GARAGES IN THE SAME PERIOD OF TIME. ALTHOUGH THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PARKING SPACES, THE INCREASE HAS DEVELOPED IN THE OFFSTREET AREAS WHERE TURNOVER IS LOW AND HENCE THE VOLUME OF PARKING THAT IS ACCOMMODATED IS ACTUALLY LESS THAN THE INCREASE IN SPACE INDICATES. ACCORDING TO PUBLISHED FIGURES, URBAN VEHICLE-MILES OF TRAVEL HAVE INCREASED ANNUALLY ABOUT 4.6 PERCENT FROM 1947 TO 1954. MOREOVER, PASSENGER-CAR AND TRUCK REGISTRATIONS IN THE COUNTIES OF 26 OF THE 37 CITIES, FOR WHICH VEHICLE REGISTRATION DATA WERE OBTAINABLE, INCREASED AT AN AVERAGE RATE OF SEVEN PERCENT. /AUTHOR/
