SPOT STUDIES IN PARKING RESEARCH
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF AN ATTENDANT PARKING FACILITY TO ONE HAVING SELF SERVICE WAS DONE. THE LOCATION AND PRINCIPLE OBJECTIVES PROVED MOST IMPORTANT. FOR ALL DRIVERS WHO HAD USED BOTH GARAGES, THE PREFERENCE TO ATTENDANT PARKING WAS 1.5 TO 1. THE TWO GARAGES, BECAUSE OF THEIR PURPOSES, HAVE SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT POLICIES WHICH HAVE A BEARING ON THEIR OPERATING COSTS. THE ATTENDANT PARKING FACILITY, ALTHOUGH PROFESSIONALLY OPERATED, IS OWNED BY A DEPARTMENT STORE, AND HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF ATTRACTING AS MANY POTENTIAL STORE CUSTOMERS AS POSSIBLE, WITH THE COST NOT A CONTROLLING ITEM. BY USING ATTENDANTS, LESS SPACE PER CAR IS REQUIRED, BUT A MUCH LARGER RESERVOIR SPACE, 24 OR MORE, IS NEEDED. THE SELF PARKING GARAGE IS OPEN ALL HOURS AND ON MANY HOLIDAYS. OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL, IT WOULD APPEAR THAT UNLESS OR UNTIL A GARAGE APPROACHES CAPACITY USAGE, SELF-PARKING SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE JUST AS MANY PARKERS AS ATTENDANT PARKING AND PERHAPS HANDLE THEM MORE RAPIDLY, AND USUALLY AT A LOWER COST. IN CONSIDERATION OF ATTENDANT VS. SELF PARKING FOR ANY PROPOSED FACILITY, IT MUST BE UNDERSTOOD THAT THE PHYSICAL DESIGN IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE.
