CONSIDERATION OF COMPREHENSION TIME IN DESIGNING HIGHWAY SIGNS

THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE CONCERNING TIMES REQUIRED FOR A DRIVER TO OBTAIN INFORMATION FROM HIGHWAY SIGNS ARE PRESENTED. DESIGN FORMULAS, RESEARCH STUDIES ON EYE MOVEMENT, DRIVER PRECEPTION, AND TYPICAL SIGNS ARE DISCUSSED. SIGNS SHOULD BE DESIGNED AND LOCATED SO THAT THE DRIVER WILL HAVE TIME TO READ THE MESSAGE, EVALUATE ITS CONTENT, AND MAKE A DICISION BASED UPON THIS INFORMATION BEFORE REACHING THE DECISION POINT ON THE ROADWAY. /AUTHOR/
