DISABLED VEHICLE LOCATION AND AID SYSTEMS

SEVEN EXISTING AND PROPOSED SCHEMES FOR LOCATING AND AIDING DISABLED VEHICLES ARE DISCUSSED. ROAD VOICE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS CONSIST OF EMERGENCY TELEPHONES FROM 1/4 TO 1 MILE APART ON MAJOR HIGHWAYS. PUSH BUTTON SYSTEMS PROVIDE THE MOTORIST WITH A CALL BOX CONTAINING SEVERAL BUTTONS (AMBULANCE, FIRE, BREAKDOWN, POLICE) HE MAY PUSH FOR AID. POLICE AND EMERGENCY PATROLS STOP TO ASSIST MOTORISTS PARKED ALONG A HIGHWAY. CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION IS USED TO MONITOR THE TRAFFIC SITUATION, BT CANNOT PROVIDE DIRECT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN OPERATOR AND MOTORIST. COOPERATIVE MOTORIST SYSTEMS RELY ON PASSING MOTORISTS TO REPORT DISABLED VEHICLES. ONE METHOD CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF ROADSIDE DETECTORS WHICH THE DRIVER CAN SIGNAL BY FLASHING HIS HEADLIGHTS. ANOTHER DEPENDS ON CERTAIN DRIVERS WHOSE CARS ARE EQUIPPED WITH MOBILE CITIZEN BAND TRANSCEIVERS. THE DRIVER AID INFORMATION RESCUE (DAIR) SYSTEM IS A TWO WAY COMMUNICATION SYSTEM, WITH BOTH VOICE CONTACT AND A DISPLAY PANEL WITH WARNINGS TO SUPPLEMENT TRAFFIC SIGNS, AND INCAR ROUTE DIRECTION INDICATOR. A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM USING INFRARED SIGNALS FROM DISABLED MOTORISTS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN WHICH EACH VEHICLE CAN BE MONITORED. WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPS, THE TRANSMITTER WOULD BE AUTOMATICALLY TURNED ON, AND THE MOTORIST COULD SIGNAL FOR AID.
