FCC APPROVES HIGHWAY EMERGENCY RADIO COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM 450 MHZ FREQUENCIES

AN EMERGENCY RADIO COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM WAS APPROVED BY THE FCC TO ALLOW FOR RADIO CALL BOX FIXED STATION OPERATIONS ON FOUR PAIRS OF 450 MHZ FREQUENCIES. THE BOXES WOULD BE INSTALLED ALONG MAJOR HIGHWAYS FOR MOTORISTS TO VOICE AND TONE COMMUNICATE WITH CONTROL CENTERS FOR ASSISTANCE, AND FOR TRANSMISSION OF TONES FROM ROADSIDE SENSORS DEVICES REGARDING WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS WHICH WOULD ACTIVATE HIGHWAY SIGNS. SEVENTEEN ORGANIZATIONS WERE GIVEN TIME TO COMMENT, AND SOME MODIFICATIONS WERE MADE IN THE ORIGINAL STANDARDS. CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT OF THE SYSTEM IS ENCOURAGED. MAXIMUM CALL BOX POWER OF ONE WATT INPUT TO THE ANTENNA WAS DECIDED UPON. ANTENNA HEIGHT OF THE CALL BOXES WILL BE LIMITED TO 20 FT ABOVE THE MOUNTING SURFACE. A 50 FT LIMITATION WAS PUT ON THE TRANSMITTING ANTENNA HEIGHT AT THE CONTROL STATIONS. NO SNANDARDIZATION OF THE NONVOICE CODING SYSTEM WILL BE MADE AT THIS TIME; LICENSES WILL BE PERMITTED TO USE CODES OF THEIR CHOICE. CALL BOXES WILL BE PERMITTED ON ANY LIMITED ACCESS HIGHWAY.
