AUTOMATIC DISCRIMINATION BETWEEN DIFFERENT KINDS OF VEHICLES FOR ROAD TRAFFIC COUNTS
INDUCTIVE LOOP DETECTORS HAVE BEEN IN USE FOR A LONG TIME IN CONDUCTING CONTINUOUS TRAFFIC COUNTS. A METHOD OF DISCRIMINATING THE KINDS OF VEHICLES BY USING AN ANALOG CIRCUIT IS DESCRIBED. THE CIRCUIT UTILIZES BOTH RESPONSE TIME AND CHANGE IN INDUCTANCE. THE CIRCUIT BOARD HAS SPECIAL LOGIC ELEMENTS TO PROVIDE FOR (1) CLOSE-FOLLOWING VEHICLES, (2) COUNTING TRUCK TRAILER AND TRUCK SEMI-TRAILERS AS ONE UNIT, (3) DISCRIMINATING CLOSE-FOLLOWING AUTOS AND TRUCKS, AND (4) A LOW SPEED CUTOUT TO PREVENT OVERLOADING OF THE COMPUTER MEMORY CIRCUIT. THE ERROR IN CLASSIFICATION OF KINDS OF VEHICLES WAS FOUND TO BE ABOUT ONE PERCENT. /TSR & A/
