FREEWAY CORRIDOR STUDIED FOR BETTER TRAFFIC FLOW
JUNE 1971 MARKS THE END OF A 3-YEAR CONTRACT OF THE TEXAS TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE WITH THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO STUDY REQUIREMENTS FOR OPTIMUM FREEWAY CORRIDOR CONTROL, WITH EMPHASIS ON DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS FOR CORRIDOR SURVEILLANCE AND CONTROL SYSTEMS AND CONTROL LOGIC AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR INTEGRATING LOCAL RAMP MERGING, LOCAL STREET INTERSECTION, AND SELECTED FREEWAY AND SURFACE STREET DATA INPUTS TO A CENTRALIZED COMPUTER. THE AREA CHOSEN FOR STUDY IS THE NORTH CENTRAL EXPRESSWAY IN DALLAS (TEX.), WHOSE CORRIDOR EXTENDS ABOUT 2 MILES ON EITHER SIDE ON ITS 12-MILE LENGTH. IT IS PLANNED THAT ULTIMATELY 100 ARTERIAL INTERSECTIONS, 15 FRONTAGE ROAD INTERSECTIONS, AND 39 FREEWAY ENTRANCE RAMPS WILL BE CONTROLLED BY DIGITAL COMPUTER. FEATURES OF THE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED.
