THE HIGHWAY RAILROAD GRADE CROSSING IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
FIVE-YEAR ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE WITHIN 500 FEET OF 121 ACTIVE CONNECTICUT GRADE CROSSINGS WAS INVESTIGATED TO DETERMINE LOCATIONS REQUIRING ADDITIONAL PROTECTION. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RAIL LINE, THE HIGHWAY, AND THE CROSSING WERE IDENTIFIED, TABULATED, ANALYZED, AND REVIEWED. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TWO MOST CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF GRADE CROSSINGS WITH HIGH ACCIDENT RATES ARE THE PRESENCE OF A TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNAL AND/OR CROSSING GATES. SUBSEQUENT STUDY SHOWED THAT A MAJORITY OF DRIVERS EXHIBIT CONTEMPT FOR TRAFFIC REGULATORS AT CROSSINGS. STUDY IS CONTINUING.
