Achieving Modal Shift Through Demand Management Measures in Singapore
Travel demand management is essential in Singapore, due to the country’s small size and dense population. In 2008, a land transportation master plan was developed to shape transportation policies and development for the next 10 to 15 years. The three strategies of the master plan include: making public transportation a choice mode, managing road usage and keeping traffic moving, and meeting diverse needs of the public in order to contribute to a quality livable environment. Singapore employs an electronic road pricing system and a vehicle quota system to discourage automobile travel. To encourage these drivers to switch to public transit, Singapore has invested heavily to improve the accessibility, quality and convenience of its bus and rail transit systems.
