LARGE SHIPS OF GLASS REINFORCED PLASTICS

Brief report on building and launching of midship section of a ship which would have a displacement of 600 tons and length of 160 ft. Fully mechanized lay-up techniques are developed and applied. The hull consisted of a sandwich contruction in order to achieve the required stiffness. Two skins of GRP surrounded a closed cell core. The mold tools for the hull section, the decks and bulkheads were made and lay-up began in a shed at a yard. The required laminate thickness and coverage was progressively built up. The bulk-heads and decks, prefabricated on panel tools were positioned in the hull and the joints laid up. The hull mold was removed and the ship launched in 1967. Economic considerations.
