Under construction
This article features ten of the United States' highest-profile transportation infrastructure projects currently under way, five of which are making steady progress, and five of which are facing some serious challenges. A brief project synopsis is provided for each, along with reasons for its success or jeopardy. The five projects making progress are as follows: Dulles Transit Extension (Washington, D.C. area); Otay Mesa East (port facility, San Diego area); O'Hare Modernization (Chicago); Crescent Corridor Expansion (freight rail network from New Orleans to New Jersey); and Alaskan Way Viaduct. The five projects in limbo are as follows: Columbia River Crossing (joint Oregon-Washington project); Denver FasTracks (commuter and light rail, bus rapid transit); NextGen (Federal Aviation Administration project - advanced flight-tracking, communication systems technology); California High-Speed Rail (high-speed connection from Los Angeles to San Francisco); and Second Avenue Subway (East Side of Manhattan).
