DIGITAL COMPUTERS IN TRAFFIC CONTROL--THE EXPERIENCE AND THE SIGNIFICANCE
CONGESTION OF VEHICLE TRAFFIC IS ONE OF THE MORE SERIOUS PROBLEMS FACING MUNICIPAL AND COUNTY ADMINISTRATORS. THIS HAS FOSTERED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SERIES OF DEVICES, OF INCREASING CAPABILITY, FOR THE CONTROL OF SIGNALS. THE DIGITAL COMPUTER PRESENTS THE FIRST POSSIBLITY FOR A COMPLETELY AUTOMATIC SYSTEM THAT ENCOMPASSES ALL THE NECESSARY ELEMENTS OF CONTROL--INFORMATION GATHERING, DECISION MAKING, EXECUTION, VERIFICATION, AND EVALUATION. DIGITAL SYSTEMS HAVE DEMONSTRATED NOT ONLY THEIR POTENCY AS A TRAFFIC ENGINEERING TOOL, BUT ALSO THE VALUE OF IMPROVED CONTROL. THE COMPUTER-CONTROLLED SYSTEM IS A SUPERIOR TOOL, IT ENABLES THE TRAFFIC ENGINEER TO KEEP ABREAST OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND IMPLEMENT THEM MORE RAPIDLY THAN EVER BEFORE, TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HIS PROBLEM AND QUANTIFY THE EFFECTS OF CHANGE, TO MAKE BETTER USE OF HIS OWN TALENTS AND THOSE OF HIS COLLEAGUES, AND TO GROW PROFESSIONALLY BY ADDING NEW SKILLS. /AUTHOR/
