TRAFFIC SIGNALS VISIBLE ONLY TO SELECTED DRIVERS
RECENTLY DEVELOPED SIGNAL LIGHTS WITH THE UNIQUE ABILITY TO CHANNEL THEIR BEAMS BY OPTICALLY SELECTIVITY ARE VISIBLE ONLY TO CERTAIN DRIVERS AND ARE HELPING TO CONTROL TRAFFIC FLOW AT COMPLEX INTERSECTIONS. TO DRIVERS IN EXCLUDED LANES THE SIGNALS APPEAR NOT TO BE IN USE. THE NEW SIGNALS CAN BE BEAMED WITH AN ACCURACY OF PLUS OR MINUS 7 INCHES AT 900 FEET. THEIR NIGHT EFFECTIVENESS IS ENHANCED BY AN AUTOMATIC DIMMER. SIDEGLOW IS LESS THAN 1/40 THAT OF CONVENTIONAL LOUVERED SIGNALS. THE KEY ELEMENT IS A FLAT, INCREMENTAL LENS SEALED IN ACRYLIC. THIS LENS, IN COMBINATION WITH A CONVEX GLASS ELEMENT CALLED THE OPTICAL LIMITER, CONTROLS WHAT THE MOTORIST SEES AND WHERE HE SEES IT. THE EXPERIENCES WITH THE SIGNAL IN MILWAUKEE ARE DESCRIBED AND SPECIFICATIONS ARE SUGGESTED.
