RADIOISOTOPE POWERS SELF-LUMINOUS SIGN
THE ARIZONA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT HAS INSTALLED A SELF-LUMINOUS OVERHEAD TRAFFIC SIGN AT A PHOENIX INTERSECTION. THIS IS THE FIRST FUNCTIONAL OVERHEAD TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGN POWERED BY THE RADIOISOTOPE KRYPTON 85 IN THE UNITED STATES. THE SIGN REQUIRES NO ELECTRICAL POWER AND IS DESIGNED WITH A NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALLY EXCITED, MODULAR LIGHT SOURCES (I-LITES) WHICH FORM THE LEGEND. THE MODULAR CONCEPT ALLOWS FULL FLEXIBILITY FROM A DESIGN STANDPOINT. THE SEALED SELF-LUMINOUS MODULES CONTAIN A LIGHT-GENERATING PHOSPHOR IN COMBINATION WITH THE RADIOISOTOPE KRYPTON 85, A NUCLEAR REACTOR BYPRODUCT GAS. /AUTHOR/
