AN ANALYSIS OF SUN PHANTOM IN ROAD TRAFFIC SIGNAL LIGHTS
SUN PHANTOM IS SPURIOUS SIGNAL INDICATION CAUSED BY REFLECTION OF SUNLIGHT AND SKYLIGHT AT THE OPTICAL SURFACES OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL ASSEMBLIES. CONFUSION BETWEEN REAL AND SUN PHANTOM SIGNAL INDICATIONS HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS A PROBLEM IN TRAFFIC SIGNALING FOR SOME YEARS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO IDENTIFY THE SOURCE AND INTENSITY OF SUN PHANTOM. MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE OF LIGHT REFLECTION OF A TRAFFIC SIGNAL UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS. DESIGN FEATURES WHICH CAN REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF SUN PHANTOM ARE DISCUSSED, ESPECIALLY FOR THE YELLOW AND RED SIGNALS.
