ITS Deployment in Johannesburg
South Africa hosts the 2010 FIFA World Cup, considered to be the world’s premier sporting event. As well as preparations for the events themselves, improving the transportation network is a priority. Included among the initiatives, the City of Johannesburg is implementing a bus rapid transport system in primarily an exclusive median, and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) throughout the City. The ITS systems being deployed are part of a developed and coherent ITS Road Map prepared by Stewart Scott International (SSI), South Africa and Delcan International Corporation (Delcan), Canada to meet the requirements and needs for this important event and beyond. In this paper the authors will provide an overview of Johannesburg ITS integrated deployment from the early conception associated with the development of the ITS Road Map up to current implementation status including a review of the needs, the approaches considered and the technology and systems implemented. The paper will also present the procurement approaches and procurement options which were analyzed and finally implemented in Johannesburg including the challenges faced during the deployment and how these challenges have been managed.
