Mapping the Underworld to Minimise Street Works

This chapter describes the origin, progress and outcomes of the “Mapping the Underworld” project. The project is a government research council funded project, jointly supported by the United Kingdom (UK) Water Industry Research, seeking to develop techniques to locate and map all of the buried pipes and cables that comprise the utility service infrastructure without resorting to excavation. This is a large challenge that comes from a long-term vision that was developed in 1996 between UK water and gas industries. This challenge has developed through a program of drawing both academia and the relevant stakeholders together for collaboration. This process of academia-industry cooperation is explained in the context of a 25-year vision of research and development that will ultimately benefit road users and society in general.
