TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL WITH LONG-LOOP DETECTORS

CONVENTIONAL VEHICLE-ACTUATED TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL HAS BEEN COMPARED WITH CONTROL USING LONG-LOOP DETECTORS AND AN ELECTRONIC CONTROLLER. SINGLE THREAD LOOPS WERE INSTALLED IN ALL APPROACHES TO A FOUR-WAY JUNCTION. THE CONTROLLER REGISTERED DEMAND AND HELD THE GREEN SIGNAL WHILE A VEHICLE OCCUPIED THE LOOP, RETURNING ALL SIGNALS TO RED WHEN NO VEHICLES WERE PRESENT. SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS OF AVERAGE DELAY AND NUMBER OF STOPS WERE OBTAINED. THE ANALOG OUTPUT FROM THE DETECTOR COULD BE USED TO MEASURE OCCUPANCY AND TO DISTINGUISH BUSES FROM OTHER VEHICLES. /RRL(A)/
