DOCK FENDERS FOR THE FUTURE. AN ABSORBING PROBLEM

Considerations of absorbing problems of dock fender units related to new generation of super tankers. With large tankers berthing would require the absorption of 800 ft ton of energy and wind loads are as high as up to 700 ton, imposing far greater loads on the fender than those applied during docking. One solution uses standard earthmover tires; description of the new fender unit that uses elastic and plastic deformation to absorb the load. In this case, pneumatic tires are fitted on a vertical axle between torque arms, carried by a torque tube; all these fender installations recently developed use natural rubber as absorbing medium.
