Parking-Related Crash Characteristics

Parking lots are the locations of many accidents, but since most of these accidents are low-speed and result in property damage only, they have been the subject of little research. This paper investigates the characteristics of crashes in parking lots. Risk factors related to the traffic environment, drivers and vehicles were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results show that parking lot accidents were more likely to occur when the driver’s vision was obstructed by buildings/fixed objects, with a parked car, and while backing the vehicle. Age, gender and race were all found to be significant driver attributes. White drivers, older drivers and female drivers all showed greater propensity of being involved in a parking lot collision. Crash propensity was 20.2% lower during dawn and dusk hours than during daytime and was also lower during periods of cloudy, rainy or foggy weather. These findings can be used as the basis for future research on parking lot crashes in order to reduce these accidents through targeted education and design interventions.
