THE FIRST ARTICLE GIVES A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW MOTORWAY SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM BROUGHT INTO OPERATION ON 14 MILES OF THE LONDON END OF THE M4 ON MARCH 21, 1969. THE SECOND DESCRIBES IN DETAIL THE COMPUTERIZED CONTROL CENTER LOCATED IN A NEW POLICE BUILDING ERECTED ON THE MOTORWAY SERVICE AREA AT HESTON. IN THE THIRD ARTICLE, DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE EQUIPMENT (DETECTORS, TELEPHONES, AND CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION) INSTALLED ON THE MOTORWAY ITSELF. THE LAST ARTICLE IS CONCERNED WITH TRAFFIC PROBLEMS ON THE M4, INCLUDING DRIVER BEHAVIOUR AND THE ROLE OF THE POLICE, AND PRESENTS SOME ACCIDENT DATA. /RRL/
