SAFETY AT LEVEL CROSSINGS /IN GERMAN/

THE BEHAVIOR OF ROAD USERS AT LEVEL CROSSINGS AS LAID DOWN IN GERMAN SPECIFICATIONS IS DISCUSSED, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE PRIORITY OF TRAINS OVER ROAD VEHICLES AT ALL CROSSINGS EQUIPPED WITH CROSS BARS. NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN AUTOMATIC SAFETY DEVICES ARE DESCRIBED, INCLUDING THE WELL- KNOWN FLASHING LIGHT SYSTEM WITH OR WITHOUT BARRIERS, THE INTRODUCTION IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES OF SIGNALS WITH A YELLOW-RED COLOR SEQUENCE, AND THE USE OF AUDIBLE SIGNALS FOR TRAINS TO WARN DRIVERS OF THEIR APPROACH (THESE ARE ONLY USED ON LIGHTLY-TRAFFICKED ROADS). ABOUT A THIRD OF ALL LEVEL CROSSINGS ARE MANUALLY OPERATED. THE OPERATION OF THESE CROSSINGS BY PERSONNEL IS DESCRIBED, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THEIR CONTROL WHEN TRAFFIC DENSITY IS HEAVY. FINALLY THE TECHNICAL, FINANCIAL, AND ADMINISTRATIVE DIFFICULTIES WHICH HAVE TO BE OVERCOME IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF OVERPASSES TO BRIDGE THESE RAILWAY TRACKS ARE DISCUSSED. /BAST/RRL/
