C&NW LOOKS AT COMMUTER PARKING
ONE OF THE MAIN OBSTACLES IN THE GROWTH OF RAIL-BORNE COMMUTER TRAFFIC IS LACK OF PARKING AT STATIONS. MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE RUN OUT OF LAND NEAR RAILROADS. ONE SOLUTION IS TO BUILD MULTI-STOREY PARKING BUILDINGS, EITHER IN CONNECTION WITH THE RAILROADS (THROUGH THE USE OF AIR RIGHTS) OR IN COOPERATION WITH NEARBY SHOPPING CENTERS. UNDER THE URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION ACT, FEDERAL FUNDS CAN BE MATCHED BY LOCAL FUNDS TO PROVIDE THE FINANCING FOR SUCH BUILDINGS, THE COST OF WHICH IS OTHERWISE PROHIBITIVE.
