DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXPEDITIOUS METHOD FOR OFF-SITE TESTING OF FREEWAY SIGN FORMATS (SIGN TESTER)
THE SIGN TESTER UTILIZES A ROLL OF PAPER ON WHICH HIGHWAY LANES AND SIGNS HAVE BEEN DRAWN. THE PAPER IS ROLLED THROUGH THE MACHINE TOWARD THE DRIVER WHILE HE VIEWS THIS MOVEMENT THROUGH A RESTRICTED APERTURE. THE RESULT IS A SIMULATED MOVEMENT ALONG A HIGHWAY OR FREEWAY. A STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS THE LANE OF TRAVEL BY MOVING THE PAPER- TRANSPORT MECHANISM LATERALLY. DRIVERS' REACTIONS WERE STUDIED AS THEY ATTEMPTED TO FIND THEIR WAY THROUGH A FREEWAY-TO-FREEWAY INTERCHANGE. THREE VIBRATIONS OF DIRECTIONAL SIGNING AT THIS INTERCHANGE WERE STUDIED AND RESULTS COMPARED WITH AN EARLIER STUDY OF THE SAME THREE VIBRATIONS USING A DIFFERENT RESEARCH TECHNIQUE. /AUTHOR/
