QUEUE LENGTHS AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS
VITAL TO ANY SYSTEM OF COMPUTERIZED URBAN TRAFFIC CONTROL IS AN EFFICIENT DETECTOR LINKED TO THE CONTROLLER VIA A DATA TRANSMISSION CIRCUIT. DETECTORS CAPABLE OF SIMPLE FUNCTIONS ONLY ARE READILY AVAILABLE AND BY SITING SETS OF DETECTION UNITS ON TRAFFIC INTERSECTIONS A REASONABLE CONTROLLER FEEDER SYSTEM CAN BE ESTABLISHED. HOWEVER THE AUTHORS RESEARCHES HAVE CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED THE NEED TO ECONOMIZE ON THE NUMBERS OF DETECTORS SITED AT ANY SINGLE INTERSECTION. IT IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE TO ENSURE THAT OPTIMUM DETECTOR LOCATIONS ARE DETERMINED. AS A CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOLUTION OF THIS PROBLEM, THE AUTHOR WHILE ENGAGED AS A SENIOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM IN 1966 CONDUCTED A SERIES OF STUDIES TO RELATE QUEUE LENGTH TO NUMBER OF QUEUEING VEHICLES AND OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE USING CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION. RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS PAPER. /AUTHOR/
