PARKING CAPACITIES OF IRREGULAR AREAS

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED TO FIND THE CAPACITIES OF ON- AND OFF-STREET PARKING FACILITIES AND TO COMPARE THEM WITH ACTUAL USAGE. THE METHOD ADOPTED FOR THE STUDY WAS TO EXAMINE EXISTING OFF-STREET CAR PARKS, IN AND NEAR THE CENTRAL AREA, TOGETHER WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER SITES WHICH WOULD BE SUITABLE FOR CAR PARKS. THE CAPACITY OF EACH OF THE SITES WAS ESTIMATED BY PLOTTING PARKING SPACES AND ACCESS LANES ON MAPS AT A SCALE OF 1 IN 1250. THE EQUIVALENT AREA/CAR FOR EACH SITE WAS CALCULATED BY DIVIDING THE AREA OF EACH SITE BY ITS ESTIMATED CAPACITY. RESULTS SHOW THAT THERE IS A CURVILINEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EQUIVALENT AREA/ CAR AND THE TOTAL AREA OF IRREGULAR CAR PARKS. ESTIMATES OF CAPACITY FOR VERY IRREGULAR OR NARROW SITES OF ANY SIZE SHOULD BE BASED ON DETAILED LAYOUTS AND NOT ON GENERAL FIGURES FOR EQUIVALENT/CAR.
